Exciting times lie ahead for Thornton Golf Club if Thornton Golf Club ‘Club Golf’ presentation evening which was held on Wednesday evening at the Club House has anything to go by. With 22 of the 27 participating children in attendance supported by many relatives and friends they were presented with their certificates of competence in completing the 10 week course. Eric Walker professional at Burntisland Golf Course presented the certificates and free memberships for the children. Eric was well supported by the six volunteer level 1 coaches. Next year was discussed and 4 parents offered to take on the Club Golf level 1 coaching to support the existing coaches which will allow the club to spread their net into further schools. Over 3 Sunday’s in August the club will run a 4 hole competition for the children with a view to going on into September.
In the picture with the children back row are coaches Lorna Fury, Geoff Sampson, John Anderson, Gary Hutchison, Derek Lee, Eric Walker (professional), Hazel Cree (Club Captain) and Donnie McKenzie.
The Club Golf initiative which was undertaken by Thornton Golf Club has proven to be an undoubted success at the club again this year held its final session prior to the school holidays. Assisted by the active schools co-ordinators in Glenrothes and in particular Michael Kavanagh Sports Development Officer and with assisted funding from the Post code lottery allowed for Professional assistance from Eric Walker Professional at Burntisland Golf Club to compliment the sterling work done by the 6 volunteer level 1 coaches at Thornton. Over a 10 week session where we were blessed with good weather 12 children who were going into their second year and 17 doing their first year, progressed to a satisfactory competence level. A presentation evening will be held soon, with a view to the children going into a local competition at the club possibly on a Sunday afternoon.
